The use of this example of a modern computer systems design challenge can be a valuable case study as a teaching tool in computer science. The OLPC laptop is a multiple-purpose computer that is rugged, low-cost, low-power, mesh- networked, and inexpensive. An overview of the technology in the laptops is given, as well as curricula suggestions for using the laptops in an undergraduate computer science curriculum.

This report will look at the background information about Eldoret Writers Centre based in Eldoret which will assist in looking at the methodologies, system design, implementation and testing involved. Lastly, we will look at the experiences gained while working on this project.

Mobile phone users in Ghana have increased over the years and are still increasing with some people having more than one phone. The introduction of mobile phones that have the capability of accessing the internet has brought rise to applications developed solely for the mobile platform and also websites that are built to fit the mobile specifications such as screen size, page size, size of images, and processing power.

In order for this to be effective, a number of activities must be carried out. Records of these activities have to be kept in order to keep track of progress. Some approaches have been tried over the years to make HRM efficient. These are the paper based system and automation of some HRM. These approaches however have proven to be inadequate. This project focuses on designing and building an employee portal system that would encourage employee interaction and puts as many activities of HRM as possible into the hands of employees. It is also aimed at automating as many HRM activities as possible. By this approach, the human resource manager would be freed up for other important human resource functions, employees would be made to feel a part of the organisation and the organisation would save money, thus making the HRM process both effective and efficient.

A number of opportunities have been provided by commercial products as well as self developed systems that incorporate a means of controlling and/or monitoring devices. However many of the solutions provided are either expensive or limited in their application. This project is concerned with the design of a flexible and low cost automation system that provides a platform upon which various automation systems can be built. It consists of hardware to interface devices to a home server which a PC is running the Windows Operating System. A desktop application which provides a Graphical User Interface to set up and configure the connected devices is developed, as well as software for a mobile device that can be used as a remote controller for the system.

Just as the population of people who do so is increasing at a geometrical rate, so also is the rate of theft or loss of those devices, and more times than often, there is always a slim chance of recovering those l ost or stolen electronic devices. The aim of this project is to provide an online pla tform whereby people in Ghana can register their electronic devices with ease, alert the necessary authorities in the event of theft or loss, and chec k via an online or mobile service if the reported device has been found. This application is not a guarantee of recovering all missing or stolen elect ronic devices reported in the country, however if most gadgets are registered , it will discourage the theft of electronic devices, reduce and eventually put a stop to the second hand sale of those devices in the black market, and aid in recovery of missing or stolen devices.

For most businesses, the inability to effectively monitor and control has been a source of preoccupation with the businesses inevitably incurring huge loses, breaking even, let alone making profits. As a key element in overhead management, inventory management is a major factor in the realization of net profit of these businesses. The rise in the scale of such small scale businesses has made it imperative for a system or mechanism that helps merchants to effectively keep an eye on and control stock hence a way of ensuring profitability. The project, an inventory management system allows the average business person to monitor and control inventory as well as act as a point of sale system. The system is developed using Microsoft.NET utilizing Seagate Crystal Report and with a MySQL database for storage. It is also networked to enable different users running the application connect to and use a shared database. Overall, the system is designed to increase the user's confidence.
- ItemManagement system for National Health Insurance hospitals(2010-04) Asaam, Nathaniel AtoIt has been observed that it is stressful for patients on the Ghana National Health Insurance Scheme to get quality health care. This stress is due to congestion at the hospitals that operate under the scheme. The congestion does not only waste the time of the patients but can also cause death. There is also the need of sharing medical and patient information among hospitals that operate under the scheme. Inability of sharing data renders the work of the scheme inefficient. This dissertation seeks to address the problem of congestions at the hospitals that operate under the scheme. The project also seeks to address the problem of how to access and manage patients and dispensary records in every hospital that operates under the scheme. The approach of this project is to develop a mobile web application to keep and manage patients and dispensary records. The main assertion is that, this system will save time and will provide a means to access and share medical information in every hospital under the scheme. The system proposed composes of a fault tolerant database system, a web interface and a mobile interface. The function of the fault tolerant database is keeping and managing the data. That of the web interface is assisting the hospital staff to administer their services. The mobile interface is a scheduling application that will enable patients to book appointments with a doctor at a specific hospital. The web interfaces deals with the need of sharing data among hospitals and the scheduling application is the means of controlling the perceived congestion at the hospitals that operate under the scheme.
- ItemPrinciples and guidelines for developing web applications for children: A Ghanaian perspective(2010-04) Arkoh, Kezia ShawlommahChildren, in Ghana, between the ages of 5 and 10 have a good amount of knowledge on the use of web applications and browsing for information on web sites. However, knowledge on how to develop web applications for these children is very limited. The process for establishing principles and guidelines for the development of web application for these children has been started, though, in countries like the United States of America. The aim of this dissertation is to start the process for establishing such principles and guidelines for Ghanaian children as well. By combining the study approaches used by a number of researchers discussed in this paper and analyzing the results, findings proved that the use of color and images should be minimal and the display of instructions should be visible and straight to the point. The facts mentioned above in addition to many others have been discovered. It is therefore essential that web developers, who seek to develop for Ghanaian children within the given age range, consider these during development.
- ItemTowards the paperless office: best practices and exploration of enterprise rights management solutions for Ghanaian business processes(2010-04) Owusu-Aning, RomeoInformation Technology continues to have a great impact on the way humans live and work. The business world is one of the aspects of life that has experienced this phenomenon. This advancement of technology has contributed to the growing use of paper in the office place which has had tremendous impact on the environment. However several new technologies have been developed to eliminate paper outright or at least reduce the amount of paper in the office environment. This phenomenon known as the 'paperless office' has become desirable but difficult objective to achieve. The objective of this research is to suggest general best practices and guidelines for implementing paperless office solutions and secondly to find out whether enterprise rights management systems can contribute to the paperless office solution. The research uses a case study methodology to analyze data on business practices. The results of the study showed that stakeholder buy-in, availability and actual use of IT resources and paperless office implementation project leadership have a strong bearing on the success or otherwise of the implementation of paperless office solution. The research also confirms findings in the literature that enterprise rights management does not provide a direct paperless benefit but rather can serve as a security enhancement that allows electronic documents to be protected from unauthorized access throughout the documents lifecycle.
- ItemOnline restaurant order system(2010-04) Al-Hassan, SalihThe use of computers has become one of the most common activities in Ghana today. With the wide variety of possible uses that exists for these complex electronic systems, it is no wonder that most of the commercial industries that exist today implement its uses one way or another. There however exist other alternatives to PC use which if explored could pave the way to greater productivity. In most restaurants that exist today, various methods are used to receive orders from customers. One of such modern day methods is the use of an online medium through which orders are made by customers through the internet, from any location. With this method, orders are normally received and managed at the restaurant on desktop computers. Using desktop computers to manage these orders however often come along with problems such as the high cost involved with the acquisition of computers, maintenance of these computers and of electricity used to power these computers. Some employees also sometimes use these computers for unproductive activities such as playing games, chatting online and sometimes viewing pornographic sites. This document reports on a project undertaken to develop an alternative system that could replace the desktop computers used to manage orders in such restaurants and also curb the problems that come with using desktop computers. It provides documentation on how the designed system works, the architecture behind it, and the procedure undertaken to arrive at the final product.
- ItemMobile payments system: The challenges to its adoption in Ghana and what can be done to make it catch on?(2010-05) Kofigah, Solomon KwashieMobile Payment System (MPS), which is the use of mobile phone as a "wallet" to make payments through a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) connectivity or Short Message Service (SMS), or through a Near Field Communication (NFC), is increasingly becoming widely used in many countries globally, such as Japan, Korea, United States of America, South Africa and Kenya. The aim of this thesis is to use various research techniques, including questionnaire, interviews, observations and case studies to find out the challenges to the adoption of Mobile Payment Systems in Ghana, and propose solutions to encourage the wide acceptance of this platform, as a convenient alternative payment system in the country. Also, an application for Mobile Payments, named SikaPay is developed. Mobile phones present an enormous opportunity for use as a platform for a "Payments System". Traditionally in Ghana, financial transactions are made using physical cash or checks. However, from the survey conducted as part of this project, people are willing to use Mobile Payment system on their phones. Also, the application developed as part of this project simulated the flexibility of how a Mobile Payment System should be, by allowing user to create their own account and update their account at any time.

This is so because most examinations taken, be it school exams or other external examinations, are taken at specific selected locations. If exams are to be taken in a school like Ashesi University for instance, there is a time table drawn which includes a course, date, time and place of the exam. The processes that precede it include typing and photocopying of questions which can use up a lot of paper, time and space even for a relatively small school such as this. For larger societies or institutions where space is an issue, examination writing can get very uncomfortable since people are crammed into one examination room. This can even lead to cheating on a large scale with after effects such as examination cancellation, grade cancellation, and etcetera. A lot of this can be reduced by developing computer based online examination software systems for use by the institutions that need them.

It also becomes necessary for the organization, in its quest to acquire software to handle the control and management of its own database, to find one that perfectly suits the processes as well as the structure of the organization. Any software that is meant to improve any process should do just that and not rather cause difficulties for the user.
- Item"Catch the bus": Facilitating transportation to and from the Ashesi campus in Berekuso(2012-04) Digber, Ivan TettehThis report presents a transit information system which provides information on the Web, via SMS and to Android based mobiles. The system relies on a web hosting service as a backbone, and it aims to facilitate transportation in all locations in which this transit information system is being used by making transit information available to commuters. This system was developed and tested with a network of privately owned vehicles in Ashesi University College in Ghana. A custom designed GPS application which logs its GPS coordinates to a web hosted service was developed for an Android based phone and placed on a vehicle. Users can query information from this web hosted service by installing an application on their Android-based phone, via SMS with any non-GPS enabled cell phone or via the web. Details on Requirements Gathering, System Design, Implementation, Testing and an outline of future work are reported. This system uses the available technology at disposal to provide a solution to the persistent lack of transit information in developing countries.

With the inclusion of visual data like pictures, emoticons and videos, people are able to relive past events they missed and are able to have a more realistic sense of how that party, dance, wedding or funeral went. More over the addition of these extra data apart from the traditional text and voice, are able to convey the unspoken words; the emotions, after all a picture can say a 1000 words. This report presents a revolutionary communication product that is supposed to take communication to a whole new level; creating the opportunity for people to accomplish some task otherwise unimaginable on the traditional communication systems.

It will also promote student engagement through predictions and allow students express their views on various issues. This is therefore necessary for the application to be easy to use by the students and serve the different classes of students in the community.

This project involves the development of a task scheduling application that will be simple enough to incorporate into their operations and can help make the operations of SMEs in such industries more efficient. Additionally, this application employs a user-friendly approach in order to eliminate the initial cost of training and to help ease their adoption of technology.

Some key aspects of such solutions include ensuring mobility and providing tools to record data. Due to the ever increasing number of people who own mobile phones, mobile technology has become one solution with various areas of interests in order to develop mobile applications that contribute to solving this problem. A mobile application that provides Community Health officers with a tool for recording data to be made available to district officers for decision making will help in various ways to reduce epidemics and assuage existent epidemics in rural areas.
- ItemThe state of local content children's television programs: A comparative study of the past and present state of children's television in Ghana(2013-04) Gerning, Nicola OseiThe central focus of this dissertation is to examine the state of local content children television in Ghana with regards to quantity and type and the importance of having more of it in the children’s television in Ghana. In order to place the situation in context, Cultivation Theory and Social Theory were adopted as theoretical frameworks. This dissertation employed three research tools - content analysis, in-depth interviews and questionnaires - in gathering data to answer research questions and achieve objectives. Within the two-year period studied, the three television stations aired a total of 15 unique title children’s programs, as compared to the 89 unique title children’s programs identified by Osei-Hwere within the four year period from 2001 to 2004. Furthermore, locally-produced children television programs were observed to be in a declining state both in Osei-Hwere’s research and in this dissertation. Views from parents and children confirmed that there is the need for more local content children’s programs in order to preserve our culture which is modest and decent and also, give children a reality that they can identify with. Factors identified for contributing to the declining state include unavailability of sponsorship, high cost of production, inadequate support from the government and managerial influence.
